What if there was one equation that could do more than anything else to help you unlock success, not only with respect to your fitness goals but in your career, your personal relationships, and your overall wellbeing? The key to making progress in any aspect of our lives is having momentum. Momentum gives you the power to steamroll obstacles in your way, blow past any distractions, and ultimately ascend to incredible heights.

The formula for attaining momentum is focus multiplied by intensity, over time. Focus refers to your ability to drown out the noise, to concentrate on one thing at a time as opposed to tackling everything in one fell swoop. When you disperse your attention in multiple directions, you sabotage your ability to focus like a laser and, in turn, your progress. A good example would be the gym goer who trains haphazardly, picking up whatever weight is convenient and simply meandering through the workout. Given the complete lack of focus on any particular muscle group, this person shouldn’t be surprised when he or she doesn’t achieve results.

The concept of intensity refers to giving 110% to every daily task, every work project, every exercise. Devoting all of your effort to something has the ability to make positive change happen . . . and fast. Even a relatively easy workout can be made intensely challenging by putting all of your blood, sweat, and tears behind it.

If you maintain focused intensity over time—the third variable in the equation—your momentum toward success will be unstoppable. Giving focused attention to a particular task over a period of days won’t have much of an impact toward your goal. Repeat that same focused effort day after day, week after week, month after month, however, and you’re sure to see astounding progress.
